About one in ten of the Google searches that bring people to our profile each month is someone looking for a home improvement store. That is a fair place to start; a big-box aisle is where most of us first see a cabinet with a price on it. The catch is that a kitchen is not one cabinet. It is twelve to twenty boxes that have to fit a room that is never quite square, arrive together, get set level, and be backed by somebody when a door shows up dented. Those four things are where a local San Antonio showroom either pays for itself or doesn't. The eight questions below are how to tell, wherever you shop.
Eight questions to ask wherever you buy
1. Who measures the kitchen?
Cabinet mistakes are usually measuring mistakes: a run that is 141 inches, not 144, a window that sits an inch lower than the sketch, a wall that is out of square. At a big-box store you measure, or you pay a third party to. We measure for free, in your home, and we own the number afterward. 2. Who draws the layout?
A layout decides where the dishwasher goes relative to the sink, whether the refrigerator door clears the island, and how many drawers you actually get. Ask who draws it and whether you can see it in 3D before you pay. Ours is free: the 3D designer lets you build the room yourself in a few minutes, or our team draws it with you in the showroom.
3. What is in stock, and what is a special order?
This is the question that sets your timeline. Special-order cabinets can take weeks, and a single missing box holds the whole install. Ask what is on the floor today. At our Bandera Road showroom, Shaker White, Shaker Gray and Navy are in stock for pickup or delivery this week; the other finishes in our five collections run about 1–3 weeks.
4. What is the box made of?
Doors get the attention, boxes decide how long the kitchen lasts. Ask whether the cabinet box is plywood or particle board, and look at the edge of a display cabinet before you believe the answer. We build on plywood boxes with dovetailed drawers and soft-close hardware; here is why that matters in a humid kitchen.
5. Who installs, and who stands behind the install?
A store that sells the cabinet and a contractor who sets it are two different companies with two different phone numbers, and when a door won't align each can point at the other. We install with our own crews and back the workmanship for three years. If you have your own installer, we hand off cleanly with the layout and the cut list.
6. What happens when something arrives wrong?
A dented door, a cabinet built to the wrong hand, a missing filler. It will happen on some job. The question is whether the fix is a return desk and a new lead time, or a person with a phone number who knows your kitchen. Ours is the second: one point of contact from estimate to the last door adjustment.
7. Can you get the countertop from the same place?
Countertops are templated after the cabinets are set, so a second vendor means a second schedule. We fabricate granite, quartz and quartzite in the same order as the cabinets, so one crew coordinates both and the template happens the day it should.
8. What does the price include?
Compare cabinets to cabinets. Our 10×10 packages start at $1,750 for the cabinets themselves; delivery, assembly, countertops and installation are itemized on a free written estimate so you can see every line and choose what you want us to do. Ask any store for the same breakdown before you compare two totals.
Where a big-box store genuinely wins
Fair is fair. If you need one replacement cabinet in a standard size, the aisle is the fastest answer. If you want to buy paint, tile, appliances and cabinets in one trip on one credit line, a big-box store is built for that. And national return policies are simple when a purchase is simple. None of that is what a full kitchen is.

Write the eight answers down for each place you are considering. If a store leaves three or more of them to you, you are not buying a kitchen from them; you are buying boxes and taking on the rest of the job yourself.
